Language Arts: Reading/Writing
Reading: Students will be reading from a variety of genres, covering many skills in the following areas:
* The Reading Process: Acquire/use new vocabulary, to build a foundation for
understanding; Using strategies to comprehend text; Become better readers, by reading
fluently
* Comprehend Literary Text: Analyzing, Describing, Drawing Conclusions, and Identifying
genres
* Comprehend Informational Text: Expository- Summarize; Fact/Opinion; Author's purpose,
Inferencing, Compare/Contrast
* Functional Text: Sequencing; Determine missing information; Interpret details
* Persuasive: Author's purpose; Identify facts/details that support an argument; Describe
strategies
Writing: Students will work on writing skills using the Common Core Standards as a guide. The following
elements will help students develop their communication skills, as they become functional,
effective writers in everyday life.
* The Writing Process: Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing, Publishing
* The Writing Components: (Six Traits) - Ideas/Content, Organization, Word Choice,
Voice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions - Capitals, usage, punctuation, spelling
* Writing Applications: Functional letters, Directions/information related to real
life; Literary Responses - articles, stories, books, pictures
* Essays: Narrative, Descriptive, Expository, Persuasive
* Research: Summarizing information; Informational reports.
